GLØGG (DANISH MULLED WINE)
After spending a semester in Denmark, the one thing that was really hard for me to get over was the fact that I wouldn't be able to have any more of Gløgg. Gløgg (pronounced /ˈklœkː/) is a warm mulled wine that the Danish drink during the cold months. Ugh, I am drooling just thinking about it. Each Scandinavian country will have its own version of warm mulled wine but in the end, they are somewhat similar. Ever since I came back to the States, every time the temperature drops, I immediately think of Gløgg and wish that I had a glass in my hand. Well, that's when Google came to the rescue! I searched for the recipe and found some that were very close to what I had in Denmark. Here is the recipe that I found online from Oh Happy Dane
Ingredients
4 cups of water
2 lemons, cut in wedges
3 oranges, cut in wedges
12 cinnamon sticks
5 pieces of cloves
3 inches of fresh ginger, cut in small pieces
1 tablespoon of cardamom
5 pieces of star anise
2 cups of brown sugar
2 cups of syrup (any kind)
Instructions
To begin, mix all the ingredients in a large pot and heat it up for a few minutes until the sugar is melted BUT be careful not to bring it to a boil
Let the mixture rest for a minimum of 2 days (preferably 3-4 days) in the refrigerator with a lid over
Sieve the mixture and pour the extract into a glass bottle. It is ready to use!
To serve: Mix all these ingredients in a pot and remember to not boil it!
¼ of the extract
1 bottle of red wine
1 cup of chopped, blanched almonds
1 cup of raisins
I hope you guys give it a try and can use it to help decompress after finals.
Happy drinking!
