Live More, Travel Often: Portland, Oregon Edition

by Law Library on 2019-03-20T08:00:00-05:00 | 0 Comments

After three years of law school, and living as a life-long student, I suggest this nugget of wisdom for you – travel as much as possible. As law students, we often forget to take moments for ourselves; fail to savor the bliss of a morning macchiato and rarely make it out to those friend adventures. You learned to put your life on hold to read through one more chapter, furiously scribbling notes on a few more hypos, and then – by the time you looked up – three years just passed you by.

Educating oneself goes beyond academic substance. By now, you know there is very little to learn from books. I’m sure you’re aghast, but I say this as the sincerest of bibliophiles. Libraries hold knowledge, but the world is your bravest exploit. When presented with the chance to visit a new place, or even an old one, take part in an epic adventure.

In the spirit of making some time for myself, I started looking through travel deal on a variety of sites. When I noticed tickets to Portland were incredibly cheap ($225 roundtrip and non-stop, from Dallas!), I wrangled a few friends into a weekend excursion. This trip was certainly one we all needed. Law school is tough, and it’s made more difficult without taking those much-needed mental health breaks.

Having never been to Portland, I dove into the deep Pinterest world for some local insights to the best coffee shops, eateries, and worth-while experiences. Sadly, we were a day late for the Science Museum’s After-Hours Medieval experience and two days early for a chance to play with elephants. The best-laid plans encounter a few snags, right? Well, we pressed on!

If you’ve only got 36 hours to immerse yourself in Portland fun, I recommend you make it to these places –

Café Ponte

This little bit of caffeinated bliss was the only shop of its kind. Homey, tasty, and oh-so-cozy! They are closed on Sundays (which we failed to notice), so be      sure to stop in to load up on their delicious flavored coffee beans and Mexican Mochas.

Annex & Al’s Den

Tasty drinks, and free entertainment? Yes, please! This underground bar offers a first-come, first-served opportunity to listen to local comics, artists, and musicians. The atmosphere here is excellent and, as a bonus, the prices won’t break your grad student budget.

Powell’s Books

You may want to reserve extra time to visit this bookstore. They have multiple rooms, thousands of books, a coffee shop, and what seem to be endless recommendations for anything your beautiful brain is craving. From the classics to the artsy world of Manga, this bookstore really does have any book your heart might desire.

Mother’s Bistro

This restaurant offered coffee while you wait. Obviously, I was a huge fan! This eatery came highly-recommended and I’ve got to say: it didn’t disappoint! The brunch specials were phenomenal, and their cinnamon rolls were superb. I recommend sharing a meal because the

Mill Ends Park

Did you know Portland is home to the world’s tiniest park? It’s less than two feet across and a funny reason to snap a photo. You’ll have to make a quick     run between traffic lights, but you can cross this off your Guinness Book of World Records Bucket List

This semester marks my last one in law school. I plan on enjoying every ounce of it: readings, late-night study sessions, and the occasional trip to a great new place. I hope you make the most of it, too!
