Minimize Law School Burnout by Enjoying an Immersive Art Experience

Are you struggling with law school burnout? According to the organization Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers, 96% of law students experience significant stress. Many students experience increases in anxiety and depression within their first year of law school. Furthermore, research suggests law students are among the most demoralized and depressed graduate student populations. So, what options do students have to relieve their stress?

Students can avoid burnout by implementing gratification into their lives, on weekends or in their spare time. Viewing, creating, and experiencing art offer unique therapeutic outlets for many people. Researchers have identified browsing art galleries as an option for lowering the body’s concentration of the stress hormone cortisol. So, visiting art galleries, like the immersive art experiences described below, can be a fun and convenient way to prevent school-induced stress and burnout!

What is an immersive art experience?

The traditional museum experience generally provides a visual experience. Patrons enjoy works of art contained in a canvas, behind spatial or material barriers. Companies promising “immersive art experiences” offer exhibits which stimulate several senses at once, like visual, auditory, and smell. Furthermore, these exhibits encourage visitors to interact with the artwork. Oftentimes, the exhibitions project their artwork on the visitors and emit the aroma of the artwork’s subject, like sunflowers. Also, accompanying music and noises generally fill the background.

The Dallas Van Gogh experience

Two Van Gogh immersive exhibits will land in Dallas this summer. The “Immersive Van Gogh Exhibit,” opening its doors in June, will offer 500,000 CF of monumental projections animating Van Gogh’s works. The projected images illustrate the floors, brickwork, and columns with Van Gogh’s popular art. Siccardi redesigns the experience to fit with the architecture of the space holding the exhibition and tries to tell the story following a loose stream of consciousness that takes visitors through a recreation of van Gogh’s perspective using large images and animations, said Corey Ross, a producer of the exhibition.

Alternatively, the “Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience” will open in August. This exhibit features 20,000 SF of screens and projections. Additionally, it offers a portrait of the artist’s life with a guided ten-minute journey titled ‘A day in the life of the Artist.’ The journey describes the inspiration behind eight of his iconic artworks, including the Starry Night Over the Rhone River. The similarly named events offer similar experiences, through which guests can experience total immersion in Van Gogh’s art.

The bottom line is: relax and take care of yourself this summer so you can tackle the fall semester with your best effort!
