Remote Resources: Confronting the Coronavirus Outbreak

by Law Library on 2020-04-02T13:00:00-05:00 | 0 Comments

Remote Resources is an ongoing blog series that showcases various digital tools and resources that can help individuals stay mentally active and learning whilst they’re stuck at home.

More and more, I’ve found myself turning on the television, going to Netflix, staring at the home screen for about a minute, then turning everything back off. I’ll then turn the tv back on, go to Hulu, stare for another minute, then turn everything back off. I’ll repeat this several times a day and never end up watching anything. Am I bored with television and movies? I very well could be, and if I’m feeling this media-based ennui, surely others are as well. Therefore, I wonder, if by the time this has all passed and we can comfortably leave our homes, there will be a new form of watchable entertainment. Even now, I’m seeing more and more links being shared to streams of people doing random activities. A friend asked me if I thought people would pay to watch him nonchalantly drink a bottle of wine. I absolutely think a segment of people would pay to see that. Hell, I’d throw in a few bucks. Perhaps we’ll become so starved for contact with others that we’ll find sincere entertainment value in watching people complete menial tasks and activities. Now, who wants to watch me brush my teeth?

Until that time, if you find yourself bored with traditional entertainment options, staying informed about the goings-on in the world during these crazy times is a great alternative. I know it is easy to become overwhelmed and exhausted trying to keep up with the news. Everything is changing so quickly that it is difficult to consistently grasp what’s going on — especially since the implications of all this are so far-reaching. With this in mind, it is helpful to have a hub that collects information about the virus itself and also the disruptions it causes. The Harvard Graduate School of Education offers a fantastic resource called Confronting the Coronavirus Outbreak. It is great for anyone to use, though it has an emphasis on families with children. The website covers a multitude of topics that will inform you and, in the process, ease your mind. It’s cheesy to say, but knowledge is power. Even if you don’t have kids, it is still a great tool with its easily digestible information.

When you find yourself browsing through movies for hours at a time without actually picking one to watch, you might need to try something new for entertainment. Why not learn something new and start feeling better about this giant mess we’re in? Confronting the Coronavirus Outbreak allows you to do both with ease. If nothing else, it will hold you over until I can send you a link to videos of me brushing my teeth. If you do, by chance, have some recommended, unusual live streams, please post them in the comments. We’re all in this together, so we might as well learn something new and also watch something strange.
