Remote Resources: Time for Kids Launches Free Digital Library

Remote Resources is an ongoing blog series that showcases various digital tools and resources that can help individuals stay mentally active and learning whilst they’re stuck at home.

TIME FOR KIDS DIGITAL LIBRARY FREE FOR THE REST OF THE SCHOOL YEAR

Over the past week or so, I’ve developed a new skill; I can pretty accurately predict what time it is based on how hungry I am. Now that no one has to be anywhere, time has lost a lot of its weight. Even when I have scheduled Zoom hangouts with friends, people just hop on whenever they feel like it. I’m sure the watch industry is taking a big blow amongst all of this. Perhaps I can market my newfound ability to predict the time with my stomach grumbles and fill in the gaps left by the surely dying watch and clock companies. While this is undoubtedly a cool skill, it’s objectively strange that I’ve been able to learn this about myself. My life has lost so much structure and routine that I have both the time and the lack of external stimulation to allow me to make such realizations. Is this conflict similar to what the X-Men felt? Probably.

I’m an adult with a fully (I presume) developed brain. I can withstand (I hope) the periods of limited routine that lead to hunger-clock realizations, but kids can’t. If they don’t have the self-control to not eat literal pounds of Halloween candy, they cannot be trusted to make their own schedules amidst this social distancing. Of course, they have online school, but is that really enough? No. All of my cousins who have young children are struggling to find healthy, productive activities for their kids to partake in. With this in mind, I highly recommend checking out TIME for Kids Digital Library.

TIME for Kids is a publication that offers grade-specific stories and information that is timely and relevant. As the name suggests it is essentially TIME Magazine for the youths. I loved reading TIME for Kids when I was a wee schoolchild, and look how I turned out! At that time, however, it wasn’t offered for free. Recently, though, with everyone staying home and academic resources dwindling, TIME For Kids has begun offering their digital library for free for anyone. This is a great tool to help supplement your kids’ learning while stuck at home for an indeterminate amount of time. All you need to do is follow this link, select the appropriate grade level, and sign up. Additionally, the free subscription also includes access to Your $, a financial literacy publication for kids. For more of an overview of all that’s being offered, make sure you visit this informative page. It requires very little effort to ensure your child doesn’t learn a new, strange skill as I have, so you should definitely take advantage of this offering from TIME. Now if you’ll excuse me, my stomach is telling me it’s lunchtime.
