by Lewis Giles on 2020-10-23T07:00:00-05:00 | 0 Comments

This October brings the first Halloween in modern history that many people will be avoiding their typical parties and gatherings for more intimate movie nights, or maybe just spending a typical night in quarantine with some added Halloween treats! Regardless of how you plan to celebrate, we have some books just for the occasion!

Short Stories and Frightening Tales

The Merry Spinster: Tales of Everyday Horror by Mallory Ortberg

This short story collection combines classic fairytales, folktales, and Bible stories with elements of psychological horror, mischief, and social critique. Kirkus called it both “delightfully disturbing” and “a collection of bedtime stories that will keep you up at night for all the right reasons”. Tales like “The Six Boy-Coffins" could be perfect for sharing with your family around a spooky backyard fire or reading while under your covers with a cup of hot cider!

Ghost Stories: Classic Tales of Horror and Suspense, Edited by Lisa Morton and Leslie S. Klinger

This collection is full of the best classic horror and ghost tales. With entries by authors like Edgar Allan Poe and Mark Twain, there is sure to be something for everyone! These tales are more serious and suspenseful than the previous collection and you have eighteen of them to choose from. Unlike when many of them were written, reading by candlelight is optional for this choice!

Frighteningly True Crime Reads

I'll be gone in the dark : one woman's obsessive search for the Golden State Killer by Michelle McNamara

This best seller gained enormous popularity due to the arrest of the Golden State Killer shortly after its release. The book is chilling and captivating, a story of almost unmatched horror but also of one woman’s decade-long obsession to help find this man who had caused so much harm. The Guardian calls it “unforgettable” and notes that McNamara, “When she died at the age of 46 in 2016, leaving the book unfinished, she had amassed 3,500 files related to the case, plus dozens of notebooks, legal pads, digitised police reports and 37 boxes from an Orange County prosecutor (the book was finished by her lead researcher and a colleague).” Decades after he terrorized California, many people praised the author for her detailed investigation and for reviving interest in the elusive serial rapist and murderer who was finally arrested in April of 2018. This book is perfect for the binge readers and true crime fanatics out there!

True Crime Graphic Novel

From Hell by Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell

This large, black and white volume captures the horrific story of Jack the Ripper in a dark, graphic storytelling format. This classic work brings one of England’s most terrifying serial killers to life in gory detail with police procedural type narration. Salon called it “one of the most intricate and disturbing works that the field of graphic novels has yet produced.” Lastly, the book can be accompanied by the mysterious and thrilling film version released in 2001 for a doubly terrifying night of horror!

So, we hope you will enjoy one of these terrific, terrifying titles! However, be warned that you might want to sleep with a light on after reading. Happy Halloween!
