When a witch/professor meets an ancient vampire/professor in Oxford’s Bodleian Library, guess what happens? LOVE. Their courtship is explicitly banned by a mysterious governing body of supernatural creatures. Did I mention the protagonist Diana Bishop is the world’s most powerful witch (unbeknownst to her) and her suitor Matthew Clairmont is super rich. And beknownst (just go with it) to everyone they are both hot. Along their journey they must face family feuds, mysteries, magical boot camp and time travel.

The core story is contained in three books known collectively as the All Souls Trilogy (A Discovery of Witches, Shadow of Night and The Book of Life). Author Deborah Harkness earned her Ph.D. from University of California Davis and is now a Professor at the University of Southern California specializing in the history of science and medicine.

This series has a VERY devoted following. The author collaborated with two fans to compile an encyclopedia on all things All Souls published in 2018 as The World of All Souls. Fans have also organized a yearly convention based around the series. For $149 a ticket you can cosplay as your favorite character with your fellow fans.

A television series debuting just a few weeks ago in the UK based on the books is sure to bring renewed interest to the source material. The first season will be a total of 8 episodes. If you are interested check out the trailer below.

The world of All Souls has recently expanded with a new spin-off book Time’s Convert which focuses on a supporting character from the original series.
