Handwashing is something so simple yet very important that is often neglected. Viruses that cause flu and colds are most often transmitted on the hands. Contaminated hands come in contact with us when we rub our nose or our eyes. By washing our hands frequently, we wash away germs that might have been picked up from other people and contaminated surfaces. It is especially important to wash our hands in the colder months since it is when the flu is in season.
When to wash our hands?
Before, during and after preparing food
Before eating food
Before and after caring for someone who is sick
Before and after treating a cut or wound
After using the toilet (I have seen people who don’t…ew)
After blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing
After touching an animal, animal feed or animal waste
After handling pet food or pet treats
After touching garbage
What do we use to wash our hands?
We use soap and hand sanitizer! However, they should be applied correctly. It is best to use soap and water whenever possible — when your hands are visibly dirty, they need to be washed with soap and water. Hand-sanitizer won’t be enough since it cannot remove some germs such as clostridium difficile – diarrhea-causing bacteria.
How to wash your hands correctly?
Rinse your hands with warm water
Use soap and lather up for about 20 seconds
Rinse and dry with a clean towel or paper towel.
Simple as that!
Handwashing is a very important habit since it helps prevent illness. Preventing illness means reducing the number of antibiotics people use and the likelihood that antibiotic resistance will develop. More importantly, handwashing can also prevent people from getting sick with viruses or bacteria that are already resistant to antibiotics and are already difficult to treat!
