Lost Item Charges

Lost Items:

The period of time until an item's status is changed to "lost" is based on the item's location and loan period:

2 Hour Reserve Item – Patron charged after 48 hours overdue.

7 day reserve – Patron charged after 7 days overdue.

General collection – patron charged after 30 days overdue.

General Collection:

The lost item fee for an item from the general collection is $100.00 or cost of replacement as determined by the library whichever is greater. The patron is also responsible for all late fines associated with item before the item's status was changed to lost. Depending on the item, you may be able to reduce the lost item fee by providing an acceptable replacement copy and paying a processing fee of $10.00. We will accept a replacement copy of the item given the following criteria:

  • the replacement copy is in good condition (no highlighting, pen/pencil marks, missing/damaged pages or spine damage)
  • the replacement copy has not been withdrawn from another library
  • the replacement copy is the same edition or a more recent edition.

Reserves:

Charges for lost reserve materials are assessed by adding:

  • The cost of the item as determined by the libraries,
  • A processing fee of $30.00
  • A $26.50 service fee
  • The maximum fine for the material type.

Damage to Library Materials

Damage to library materials includes, but is not limited to:

  • Spills from food and drink or other substances.
  • Damage to the cover or spine.
  • Cutting, tearing, or dog-eating pages.
  • Writing on the pages with pencil, pen, or other markers.

Writing or marking the pages:

  • You will be charged $10.00 per item.
  • If the book is not usable due to the number of pages marked, or due to additional damage, the full Lost items fee will be charged.

Laptop Charges

  • A fine of $10.00 per hour (or any portion of the hour) is assessed for laptops not returned when due. There is no grace period and no limit to overdue fines.
  • There is a replacement charge for damage to or the loss of any computer parts or accessories. Please note that after 24 hours, the Libraries will declare the laptop as missing and you will be billed the replacement cost of the laptop.
  • Continued abuse of the Laptop Policy may result in revoking laptop privileges.
